Slot Features

The feature index groups titles by mechanic rather than by subject. In this part of the market the mechanic is usually named in the title itself, because it is the main thing a studio wants a player to notice: a word such as ways, hold, rush or dice is doing the work that a subtitle would do elsewhere.

The groups are read from those words, so treat them as a starting point for comparison. A title can use a mechanic without naming it, and such a title will not appear here until it has been reviewed in full.

What the group names mean

  • Ways and Megaways. The number of ways to win changes from spin to spin because the reels hold a variable number of symbols, instead of a fixed set of paylines.
  • Hold and win. Coin or prize symbols lock in place and the remaining positions respin until no new symbol lands, after which the locked values are added up.
  • Cluster pays. Wins are formed by groups of adjoining matching symbols anywhere on the grid; position on a line does not matter.
  • High multiplier. The title advertises a multiplier ceiling, usually in the name, and the figure is a cap rather than a typical outcome.
  • Jackpot. The game carries prize tiers shown above the reels, which may be fixed amounts in the paytable rather than a pooled progressive.
  • Dice reels. Reel symbols are replaced by dice faces, a presentation published for markets where it is preferred.
  • Instant and arcade. Formats that are not reel games at all, including mine, crash, plinko, bingo and fish shooting titles.

The glossary sets out these terms, and the others used across the catalogue, in more detail.
