Responsible Play
This catalogue exists to identify games, not to encourage play for money. Demo play costs nothing; a paid session is spending, and it should be treated with the same arithmetic as any other spending.
What follows is plain and short. It is not therapy and it is not a substitute for help from someone qualified to give it.
The arithmetic, stated once
Every licensed slot is built to return less than it takes, across all players and over a very large number of spins. The published return figure is the share paid back in that aggregate, not a rate you can expect in an evening. There is no betting pattern, stake size or time of day that changes it, because each spin is drawn independently of the last.
It follows that a strategy for winning at slots cannot exist. Anything presented as one is either a misunderstanding or a sales pitch.
Limits that work
- Decide the amount before opening the game, and treat it as spent the moment you start, in the same way as the price of a cinema ticket.
- Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Time is what erodes the money limit.
- Never deposit to recover a loss. Chasing is the single behaviour that turns a bad evening into a serious problem.
- Keep it separate from income. Money for rent, food, debt or anyone else’s needs is not available for this.
- Use the operator’s own tools. Deposit caps, loss limits, session reminders and self-exclusion are built into licensed sites and are easier to use than willpower.
Warning signs
The following are worth taking seriously, not as a diagnosis but as a reason to stop and look at it honestly.
- Playing for longer or for more than you intended, repeatedly.
- Returning to recover losses, or depositing again on the same day after losing.
- Borrowing to play, or playing with money set aside for something else.
- Hiding how much is being spent, or how often.
- Feeling restless or irritable when not playing, or relief only when playing.
- Gambling to escape stress, boredom or low mood rather than for entertainment.
Where to get help
Free, confidential support exists in most countries, and the organisations below are independent of any operator.
- GamCare (United Kingdom) — helpline and online chat at gamcare.org.uk.
- Gambling Therapy — free online support in several languages at gamblingtherapy.org.
- Gamblers Anonymous — local and online meeting lists at gamblersanonymous.org.
- BeGambleAware — information and a self-assessment tool at begambleaware.org.
- National Council on Problem Gambling (United States) — helpline at ncpgambling.org.
If you are outside those regions, a national health service or a local mental health line will be able to refer you.
Age
Gambling for money is restricted to adults everywhere it is licensed, usually at 18 and in some jurisdictions at 21. This site is intended for adults. Nothing here is directed at anyone under that age, and slot artwork drawn in a cartoon style does not change that.
